Skipper Supreme as the 'Path avenge only 2009 defeat
Tuesda May 18th: It was over to Buckingham last Saturday, and the scene of our only defeat last season, on a gorgeous sunny day with no worries of a shortened game and damp wicket that we faced in May 2009. Skipper Robbie won the toss, to the disbelief of all present, even leaving Krolly speechless which is thought to be the first time that's happened since he joined from Thame.......
On a belter of a track, the home openers rarely looked troubled against the 'Path seam attack with former captain Large (rejoined from Knebworth) given the only lifeline when dropped by Toddy when in the 20's. With the score on 143 for 0 in the 35th over, the home side were looking set for a total well north of 250 - but the visitors fielding had remained very sharp and the bowling tight, and when the first chance came off the bowling of Cooky, Jehan took a superb low catch to remove Tomlinson for 67. Cooky continued to bowl probably his best spell in a Horspath shirt (albeit an unwashed for almost 2 weeks one.....) and Paul Jeacock at the other end was his normal consistent self. Through holding every catch - Jehan took another decent on and Chris Penner, moving around the rope only marginally faster than Max on his roller, took a stunning one handed catch to send Large back to the pavillion for a very good 82. After 53 overs, bowled 13 minutes ahead of schedule, the home side totalled 234 for 6, Jakey taking 4 and Cooky 2 in their long spell of spin twinning. At the half way stage, Robbie was rightly proud of the fantastic effort over the 3 hours in the field.
Toddy and Penner opened up for the 'Path and, reminiscent of his best form of previous seasons, Chris was dominant early on and as the Oxford Mail so neatly put it, "bludgeoned" his way to 54. Toddy had looked settled, but fell for 15, and it was skipper Robbie who weighed anchor while Chris rattled along - the skipper scoring 10 off his first 70 balls. Valahmbia (with seam) and Gear (spin) did a similar mid innings job for the home side as Cooky and Jakey had done, with Krolly and Ned not making double figures, although the latter dug in well and put on 37 with Robbie for the 4th wicket. Mohson, batted superbly at 6 (27 and unluckily run out) and Jehan at 7 (17) pushed the pace on at the same time as Robbie accelerated in search of the 235 to win. In search of victory too, the home side stayed with the spin of Gear and quick over rate of Valahmbia and as 7pm passed it looked like they'd bowl around 56 overs. Robbie had paced his innings superbly, and when he was joined by Will, 20 was needed off what was likely to be 3 more overs - and it came down to 9 needed off the last over from Gear. Rather than provide the complete last ball cliffhanger that seemed likely, Will despatched ball 1 for 4, ball 2 for 4 and the next for a single to win the game and set of great celebrations. The skipper, on 90 not out, had scored 10 in the first half of his knock and 80 in the second and confessed later to probably never having had a better personal feeling - or a prouder feeling in his team as Captain - in all his years (and there have been a few....) at the Club.
25 points are unlikely to feel better in 2010..................
The 'Path so near as Toddy & Krolly lead the way
Saturday May 8th: On a grey damp day, the Div 1 newcomers won the toss and elected to bowl first, which looked a great decision when they sent back Chris Penner for 0 in the opening over. Skipper Robbie joined Joey Todd and in a repeat of last week's Cherwell League Cup match they took the score to into the 40's before Robbie was out caught behind for 17. Krolly joined in form Toddy at the wicket, and after feeling his away around early on, Krolly discovered the best of his 2009 form in an excellent 60 as he put on 108 for the third wicket with Joey. Jehan was bumped up the order and made a brisk 20 to take the total to 183 and Ned Murray (8) joined Toddy to put on an unbroken 35 to take the total to 218 for 4 in 53 overs. Joey carried his bat for a mature and composed 84no.
Mase and Will opened, from opposite ends to 2009, and bowling from the Cycle Speedway end Will had the visitors in trouble at 25 for 3 in the 9th over. Wickets fell steadily with Jehan, Mossy, Cooky and Paul Jeacock chipping in with one each, but it was opener Rob Garrett's resilient 59 that held the Great Tew rearguard together and when he was 8th out in the 32nd over, Horspath scented victory. They didn't reckon on solid bottom order resistance from Woods (12no) and young Matthew Taylor (7no) and despite an excellent bowling performance (4 for 43 for Will), good performance behind the stumps from Toddy and great energy throughout in the gloom and damp in the field, Great Tew hung on until 7.30 for the draw, finishing on 116 for 9.
Horspath 16pts
